Avoid Unwanted Email After Free Downloads

Free e-books, templates, and downloads often ask for an email address. That exchange can be part of a mailing-list campaign, so messages may continue long after you collect the file.

Why it happens

A download offered in exchange for contact details is often called a lead magnet. The publisher may use it to build a list for future product offers. That does not automatically make the offer deceptive, but it is worth checking the form's consent and subscription options before submitting it.

A temporary address for a single download

If the site allows it and you do not need future access:

  1. Open PoofMail and copy the generated address.
  2. Enter it in the download form.
  3. Return to the inbox to read the message and follow the download link.
  4. Finish before the inbox expires.

PoofMail displays received message content and links; it is not a general-purpose attachment archive. Whether a file is available depends on how the sender delivers it.

When to use a permanent address

If you want ongoing updates from an author or creator, use your permanent email or an alias you control. A disposable inbox fits a one-time download better than a continuing subscription, purchase, or account with receipts and support requirements.

Other ways to reduce unwanted mail

Use aliases to separate sources and unsubscribe from legitimate subscriptions you no longer want. Treat unexpected links with care, especially in suspicious messages. A temporary address can separate a download from your personal inbox, but it does not make the sending site or file trustworthy.
