How a Temporary Email Server Works
A disposable inbox is backed by real email infrastructure. Here is how a message reaches the page after an address is generated.
1. A domain with mail routing
The provider configures its domain's DNS with an MX record identifying the receiving mail server. Sending systems use that record to locate the destination for the message.
2. An SMTP receiver
The sending server contacts the receiver using SMTP, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. A receive-only service can accept incoming mail without offering users outgoing delivery or a complete permanent mailbox.
3. Recipient validation
Before accepting a message, PoofMail checks that the recipient belongs to its domain and is an inbox that currently exists. Unknown or expired recipients are rejected. It also refuses to relay messages to other domains, preventing use as an open relay.
4. Parsing and temporary storage
The server separates the sender, subject, plain text, and HTML content. PoofMail keeps active inboxes in memory and writes a recovery snapshot on the same server. That snapshot helps active inboxes survive a process restart; it is not permanent archival storage or an off-server backup.
5. Live browser updates
The website requests new messages with the inbox's session token. Long polling lets the server hold a request until a new message arrives or the wait times out. The browser then requests the next update. If waiting is unavailable, it can fall back to periodic checks.
6. Automatic expiry
The server removes an inbox and its messages when its lifetime ends. Expired and explicitly deleted inboxes are omitted from subsequent snapshots. Requests using their old tokens are rejected.
Why use this design?
A focused receive-only service needs fewer features than a permanent email platform. It is built for short verification tasks rather than outgoing mail, permanent storage, or years of account history. That narrower purpose explains both its simplicity and its limits.
