Is Temporary Email Safe to Use?
If temporary email is meant to protect privacy, does it actually make you safer? That depends on what you use it for and how the provider controls access.
What it helps protect
A temporary address keeps your main email out of a one-time registration. That can reduce unwanted marketing, limit the number of databases holding your permanent address, and keep disposable interactions separate from important accounts.
PoofMail does not ask for your name, phone number, or a personal email account to create an inbox. That does not make your activity completely anonymous: technical logs and message contents can still contain identifying information.
What to watch out for
Access models vary. Some temporary email services let anyone open an inbox by knowing its address. PoofMail instead requires the inbox's browser session token; knowing an address alone does not grant access. Someone who obtains your token or uses the same browser session may still be able to read the messages.
Temporary email is not a confidential storage service. Messages are not end-to-end encrypted, and PoofMail does not encrypt stored message contents at rest. Do not send personal documents, financial information, or secrets to a disposable inbox.
Expiry also limits account recovery. If a service sends a password-reset link after the inbox has disappeared, you cannot retrieve it.
Using it sensibly
Keep temporary inboxes for permitted, low-stakes tasks such as a one-off download or testing your own application. For important accounts, use an email address you control long term, unique passwords, and the account's available security protections. A disposable address is a way to separate brief interactions, not a replacement for securing a permanent mailbox.
